Nasi Tumpeng

Perhaps, Rijsttafel is the Indonesian culinary best known all over the world. Rijsttafel, or "rice table" is a complete, indonesian style meal served in European setting. Although it is a Dutch idea, its origins are clearly Indonesian and it was known at one time as Makan Besar.
Indonesian people traditionally take a meal from a central plate of steamed or fried rice with other dishes arranged around it. The meal usually includes some fish or meat, a vegetable dish, and a spicy sauce known as sambel. The early Dutch planters, with their great appetites, added more and more dishes and so the Rijsttafel originated.
The range of food served contributes to the popularity of Rijsttafle. During the Dutch colonial time, it was not unheard that one was given a choice of 35 dishes, each served by an individual waiter.
The above arrangement, served on basket weaved from vegetables, is obviously special, and were made for the blessing ceremony of Bali restaurant in March 2005. Although that is not on our regular menu, you can still enjoy the feast with our Rijstaffel with 7 dishes, which, according to some, is still pretty amazing.

There is no Rijsttafel in
There is no Rijsttafel in Indonesia. No restaurant sell Rijsttafel in Indonesia (except in bali and that is for tourists)
I am Indonesian, I know some of the dishes that they serve in the 'so call' Rijsttafel , but we never will put those dishes together. Not really good mixture and too many classing taste.
It just not a real indonesian food.
So you can claim it as the most famous indonesian food.
For that you should go for sate or gado2.
The picture above is NOT Rijsttafel. It is nasi tumpeng. An offering food (food to be pray for) popular for Indonesian selametan (praying gathering). It dishes is well balaced for the coconut rice (and full of meaning). The rice is made into a mountain shape (Mountaine = God's home in the high above place).
You are right! And I
You are right! And I apologise for it. There is a restaurant selling Rijsttafel in Jakarta. I've been there, but I forgot the name. Will let you know later.
We have been doing both Tumpeng and Rijsttafel at Bali Restaurant...the Tumpeng for birthday celebrations and to 'selametan' for expectant mothers in their 7th. month of pregnancy.
The Nasi Rames, and Rijsttafel are in our menu, and since some European customers associate the Tumpeng with Rijsttafel, or Rice accompanied with many side dishes, I somehow associate them together. The mistake is mine, and mine alone, and I will correct it.
Thank you
