1 year at Bali Restaurant

I found a lot of satisfaction running this Indonesian restaurant. Regular guests comment on the ambiance, both inside and at the garden. They seem to like the homey atmosphere.

The food are pronounced authentic by Indonesian, Japanese and Dutch customers. Oxtail soup, Gado-gado and Rendang daging are the all-time favourites, but the Young Jack fruit curry and Tapioca leaf curry are getting quite popular too. Of course, Rijsttafel is a must for the Dutch.

Passion Fruit Juice and Young Coconut Pudding are the best sellers in the Drink and Dessert menu.

A year ago, I hardly had Thai customers, but after appearing in a few TV programmes and magazines, over 40% of our customers are Thais. After all, both Indonesian and Thai food use similar herbs and spices like ginger, galangal, lemon grass, and of course chilli, shallot and
garlic.

The Barong and Garuda woodcarvings, together with the Wayangs and the Batik Map of Indonesia are the decorations most admired and commented on.

Rijsttafel Special

Perhaps, Rijsttafel is the Indonesian culinary best known all over the world. Rijsttafel, or "rice table" is a complete, indonesian style meal served in European setting. Although it is a Dutch idea, its origins are clearly Indonesian and it was known at one time as Makan Besar.

Indonesian people traditionally take a meal from a central plate of steamed or fried rice with other dishes arranged around it. The meal usually includes some fish or meat, a vegetable dish, and a spicy sauce known as sambel. The early Dutch planters, with their great appetites, added more and more dishes and so the Rijsttafel originated.

The range of food served contributes to the popularity of Rijsttafle. During the Dutch colonial time, it was not unheard that one was given a choice of 35 dishes, each served by an individual waiter.

The above arrangement, served on basket weaved from vegetables, is obviously special, and were made for the blessing ceremony of Bali restaurant in March 2005. Although that is not on our regular menu, you can still enjoy the feast with our Rijstaffel with 7 dishes, which, according to some, is still pretty amazing.
